Outfit Inspiration when the City of Stars seems so far away. [ La La Land ]It's no secret. Emma Stone is one of my biggest inspirations. Despite from being one of the reasons I became a red-head back in 2014, she is also one of the reasons [...] [...] I fell in love with acting. So, naturally - when I heard about her new movie, starring alongside Ryan Gosling (hey girl), in which she not only sings but dances as well, called "La La Land" and is for "those who dream", the hopeless romantic dreamer in me jumped up and threw money at the TV screen. I went to see it yesterday... and am absolutely in love. This movie is a collection of beautiful film-making, vivid and bright sets, retro-inspired 50's costumes (hats off for Emma's costume designer) and emotionally captivating dialogue. Here's the link to the trailer in case you haven't seen it yet: La La Land (2016 Movie) Official Trailer – 'Dreamers' La La Land speaks to the core of every dreamer, who is burdened to make their unique mark on the world. This film shows through Mia (Emma Stone's character), Sebastian (Ryan Gosling's character) and their love story that pursuing your dream is something worth fighting for, but it also shows the hardships and sacrifice that comes along with it. As an aspiring actress life is an emotional roller coaster as it is. You can easily get caught up in the glamour of Hollywood and forget how nerve-wracking those auditions are and how mentally exhausting being rejected is, or you can easily get caught in a riptide of what, how, why, where and am I really good enough? When I walked out of the movie theater I was both inspired to the bone to book the next flight to Hollywood, and I was nervous and thoughtful of how this lifestyle will affect my life. As a chronic over-thinker, I guess I should stop right there before I go on a rant. But I do have to say - I am so excited about this movie and the light it sheds on those who may not believe but have enough guts to dream. So, now on to how this movie inspired my look...... temporarily, or for the long haul - we'll see. Mia is all about them vintage dresses and bright colors. She has a definite 50's vibes going on and every thing she wears is simply drool-worthy. She is fresh-faced and her hair is naturally wavy/curled. So this is how I did it. HAIR & MAKE-UP // I had to give this post 2 tries at my makeup and hair. Her eyes are naturally big and she has defined cheek bones, so I knew I may have to approach this look a bit differently. Marking DAY ONE, I did a simple makeup look with the loose natural curls that you see Emma rock throughout most of the movie. I parted my hair to the right and pulled my blunt bangs to the side. Using my flatiron, I put loose curls starting at the middle of my head. And that's it. Super simple and done in 5 mins! For my makeup, I did my usual routine - foundation, powder, highlighter, bronzer, blush, mascara and nude lipstick. With the eyeliner, I went thinner than usual to make it blend seamlessly with my lashes. I colored my brows in just a bit to make them look bold and dark -- just like Mia's. RESULTS? No to far from my normal routine, this look is simple, sweet and doesn't take much time (it took me about 15 mins). But I wasn't all the way satisfied. I didn't really feel like the "La La Land"/ romantic/ vintage vibe. So, I tried it again the next day. This time I started out with my normal routine, but added a few things to achieve that bright-eyed and sun-kissed style Emma Stone's character Mia has in "La La Land". I used a Rose pink eye shadow palette and did a soft smokey eye, to enhance my eyes and make them pop. Next instead of stopping the eye liner at the corner of my eye, I extended it a little beyond to create a little flick, which elongates the eye. Emma has a distinctive bone structure, which is hard to replicate. But I tried highlighting my face with bronzer, blush and contour and have to say I loved the way it turned out. It gives your skin a sun-kissed feel and enhances your cheek bones. I also tried a darker lipstick and despite not having the same lip shape as Emma, it felt to me as if my lip shape was refined.
Now on to the outfits.Mia's wardrobe is the definition of the wardrobe of my dreams. Simple vintage dresses, glamorous but casual, bright vivid colours, and flattering prints and cuts. Naturally I grabbed my vintage-inspired Banana Republic dress that I picked up in a thrift shop in Australia. The combination of red and lavender purple is a little on the funky side but it definitely makes me feel like a 50's girl and the cut of the dress is very similar to what Emma wears in the movie. I added a jean jacket to give the outfit more of a "Californian" touch and paired it with my favorite pair of oxfords and my favorite LBB (little black bag). I absolutely love this look! For DAY TWO, I stayed home to work on College stuff, so I paired a blue/grey pin-striped button-up with a pair of blue denim high-waist jeans. Comfortable, yet cute and although Mia only wears jeans to her barista job and back, this outfit correlates to her color palette and when worn with black and white oxfords and a little leather satchel, you're all set to roam around the city of stars. Would I dress like this every day?... Hell yeah! I am so excited about this movie and every thing it has moved in me. And I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one. Emma Stone continues to kick butt and I'm looking forward to her next projects and the inspiration it will bring. If you liked this post, let me know! Write me in the comments or on the Contact page.
